At John Matthews Architects, we take pride in our extensive portfolio of architectural projects in the San Francisco Peninsula. Our commitment to innovation, client collaboration, and community enhancement is evident in every project we undertake.
Canyon Ranch
Location: Woodside, CA
Nestled within the coastal redwood forests, our work at Canyon Ranch transformed an existing retreat center through a comprehensive addition, renovation, and structural reconstruction. This project features a concealed parking garage, substantial site improvements, and the creation of 12 steel-frame duplex “tree-house” guest rooms harmoniously integrated into the surrounding woods.
Melanie Lane Residence
Location: Atherton, CA
We revitalized an aged ranch house in the Atherton hills through a contemporary renovation that included multiple additions and thoughtful alterations. The new design introduces a striking entryway, metal standing seam roofing, upgraded windows, wall finishes, and sequential sliding doors that create expansive 19’-6” openings on both sides. Our focus was to unify the living, dining, and kitchen areas while enhancing the connection to the outdoor space and enjoying breathtaking views.
Verona Ridge Subdivision
Location: San Mateo, CA
The Verona Ridge Subdivision comprises 34 detached single-family homes designed specifically to adapt to San Mateo's steep terrain. By stepping the floor plan with the slope, we minimized crawl spaces and created up to four levels, maximizing floor space while ensuring aesthetic coherence with the landscape.
Magnolia Place
Location: San Mateo, CA
This thoughtfully designed 52-unit multi-family development features below-grade parking and is scaled to blend harmoniously within an established and sensitive community. The upper levels of the third-story townhouses are artfully nestled beneath a sheltering roofline, maintaining a low visual profile. At the same time, the ground-floor units boast inviting pocket yards that offer delightful views of the street.
Occidental Ave Residence
Location: San Mateo, CA
This remodel and addition on a gently sloping lot features a new entry porch and roof with an Asian accent, elegantly framing the front door. A spacious family room includes expansive doors connecting the interior to the garden below.
Our clients desired an open plan that reflects their lifestyle, creating a harmonious flow among the entry, living room, dining room, kitchen, and family room while preserving individual character. The master bath and bedroom extend this concept, with the tub, lavatories, and steam shower open to the bedroom for an integrated experience.
Georgetown Ave Restoration
Location: San Mateo, CA
The restoration of this landmark building adhered to The Secretary of the Interior’s Standards for Historic Buildings. Enhancements included the installation of an elevator connecting all levels and a complete remodel of the kitchen, expanding it to include previously underutilized laundry and pantry areas.
Sonora Ave Residence
Location: San Mateo, CA
This project offered our clients a second-story addition featuring a master bedroom, bath, and study alcove while preserving the gentle residential character and ensuring a seamless integration of the first and second floors. The ground-floor enhancements included a new double-height entry foyer and staircase, thoughtfully incorporated into the existing bedrooms and living spaces.
